Don’t Ignore the Signs: When Is It Time for a Root Canal

At Dr. Tiwari’s Dental Clinic, we use advanced techniques to ensure your treatment is as comfortable as a routine filling. But how do you know if you need one? Here are the key warning signs.
1. Persistent Tooth Pain
This is the most obvious red flag.
- What to look for: A deep, throbbing ache that won’t go away. You might feel severe pain when chewing, biting down, or even when lying down at night.
- Why it happens: This usually means the infection has reached the nerve (pulp) of the tooth, causing inflammation and pressure inside the tooth structure.
2. Prolonged Sensitivity to Hot or Cold
We all get a little “zing” from ice cream sometimes, but this is different.
What to look for: If you sip hot tea or cold water and the pain lingers for seconds or minutes after you’ve finished, that is a warning sign.
Why it happens: Prolonged sensitivity indicates that the nerve inside the tooth is dying or severely inflamed and needs attention.
3. Swelling or “Pimples” on the Gums
Your gums can tell you a lot about your tooth’s health.
- What to look for: Swelling, tenderness, or a small, pimple-like bump (fistula) on the gums near a painful tooth. You might also notice a bad taste in your mouth if the bump releases fluid.
- Why it happens: This is a sign of an abscess an infection that has spread from the tooth’s root into the surrounding tissue. This requires immediate treatment.
4. Darkening or Discoloration of the Tooth
Sometimes, a single tooth will start to look different from the rest.
- What to look for: A tooth that turns grey, brown, or dull compared to its neighbours.
- Why it happens: Discoloration often means there is internal damage or the nerve inside has died, usually due to past trauma or deep decay. A root canal can clear the internal debris and, often combined with a crown, restore the tooth’s appearance.
5. A Cracked or Chipped Tooth
Accidents happen whether it’s a sports injury or biting down on a popcorn kernel.
- What to look for: A visible crack or a piece of tooth missing.
- Why it happens: Even an invisible crack can provide a pathway for bacteria to enter the soft inner pulp of the tooth. Once bacteria get in, infection follows. Root canal therapy seals these cracks and prevents further deterioration.
6. Deep Decay
- The Issue: If a cavity is left untreated for too long, it grows deeper until it touches the nerve.
- The Solution: At this stage, a simple filling is no longer enough. A root canal is the only way to clean out the deep decay and save the tooth structure.
Why Saving Your Natural Tooth Matters
While extraction is an option, nothing functions quite like your natural tooth. Saving it with a root canal maintains your natural bite, prevents other teeth from shifting, and avoids the need for more expensive replacements like bridges or implants later on.
